This is the kind of question that is being seriously asked on mainstream public media here in the USA.
You believe it was a false flag operation. You believe it was orchestrated by the FBI. People are so quick to grasp at conspiracy theories. Cloak and Dagger. Smoke and Mirrors.
But there is a simple explanation. The demonstrators were exercising their own free will. They were there because they had the means and time. They chose to travel to Washington D.C. Many thousands people attended the rallies. Rally permits were gotten from the National Park Service. They were there because they wanted to be there.
How does a peaceful rally turn violent?
I guess the damning question is when was the last time a major demonstration was peaceful?
It seems that most, if not all, demonstrations nowadays are really excuses for mayhem.
This is a troubling indictment of the state of our Democracy. The right to free assembly is part of the First Amendment. This is a cornerstone of our basic institution. The accusation is that this right is being subverted by professional agitators. When does an organizer become an agitator? Aren’t they really different words for the same thing? And how can you have a rally without organizers?
As I have written about before, no demonstration is exactly alike. Any kind of assembly will differ.
It might be helpful to put things in historical perspective. Many of us alive today dimly remember the 1960s.
As Bob Dylan, in his 1964 song, wrote to the Senators and Congressmen: “There’s a battle outside and it’s raging. It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls. For the times they are a’changing.”
This time the windows were broken, and the walls were stormed.
