Should we ban all GMO?

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) refers to modifying the genetic code –the DNA, and also the RNA, of animals, plants, bacteria, and viruses. Certainly, scientists tinkering with the basic reproductive machinery of life have gotten us into lots of trouble.
1. Bayer/Monsanto Roundup fiasco. Monsanto is a local St. Louis company that was bought up by Bayer. Roundup was an herbicide that was/is used in conjunction with genetically modified resistant crops. Use of Roundup increases crop yields, but unfortunately has led to a $10.9 billion in cancer claims.
2. COVID-19. Even if the claims of an accidental lab release of a genetically engineered nanobot RNA virus are untrue, or can’t be substantiated, the fact that the scenario is plausible means an incredible potential liability with tinkering with RNA viruses. More than half a million Americans have died as of June 2021, with four million worldwide.
On the other side of the argument, the development of the vaccine was directly due to scientists tinkering with RNA viruses.
3. There have been numerous lab releases of deadly pathogens over the years. An excellent article from 2014 in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists This includes H1N1, Smallpox, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, SARS, Foot and mouth disease…

Who regulates GMOs? Are there any international treaties? In my first hundred days of Senate office, I promise to work for an immediate international moratorium on biological weapons testing.

Vicky Harzler is running for U.S. Senate for Missouri in 2022. She is a House incumbent and sits on the subcommittee  for Rural Development, Research, Biotechnology, and Foreign Agriculture.

As she states this “is also extremely important to Midwestern farmers,” added Hartzler. “The emergence of bioengineered crops is revolutionizing agriculture and the enormous growth of export markets is playing a large part in improving the bottom line for local farmers. This subcommittee will work to ensure that local farmers have access to the best crop technology and the most marketing opportunities possible.”

How good a job has she done protecting our country from Covid19 or from GMO engineered crops? I am not casting blame on Vicky, but these are extremely technical matters with lots of money on the table, and in the fields. Is she an antivaxxer? As a classic Republican, I would expect her to advocate extreme de-regulation — let the big AgTech companies do what they want to make the most profit. But I really don’t know her position.

My position is clear. The Federal Government must ensure our long-term protection of the environment and our seed stocks. And the International Community must get involved via an immediate moratorium on all Bioweapon testing.

You may not know it but the moratorium on Gain of Function (GOF)  was lifted by the Trump administration in early 2017 as he gained office. This was in keeping with his goal of cutting all “red tape”  orders that tied the hands of big business. The Obama administration had killed GOF research as too dangerous perhaps after their experience with H1N1, and the H5N1 viruses.

Vicky is a die hard Trump supporter.

John 08:07 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself,
and said unto them, He that is without sin among you,
let him first cast a stone at her.

Added June 24, 2021. Nobel Laureate David Baltimore talked about the perils and
promise of tinkering with viruses
